The strategy of finding apps for your iPhone or iPad is different for everyone. Some of us download apps based on recommendations from friends. Some of us use the app store to discover popular or new apps, maybe searching for apps based on our favourite category. Maybe you find out about apps through blogs and app review websites.
Whether you know what you're after or are just browsing there are lots of ways to help you hunt out apps. The developers over at Hello Chair undestand we like to be given a little help and have actually developed an app to help us hunt out other apps. Welcome to Explor ~ App Discovery.
Explor is slick, easy to use and contains enough social options to encourage user activity. It's this activity from users that should help us all find those hidden gems that so often get overlooked.
Explor ~ App Discovery helps you find apps related to what you’re interested in, think of it as Apple’s Genius feature but with a social aspect integrated. The social feature allows you to create a user account and select to follow other users. These can be friends, strangers, developers or publishers. Bascially, anyone who you think may have similar interests. When they like or review an app you’ll see this activity in your friends profile and you can check it out.
Don't worry if you haven't got any friends with the app though, Explor lists featured users, developers and publishers so there's always someone to follow, even if you don't know them personally. The friends option is a neat feature, if you like the current apps friends are using it's possible you'll like future apps they choose to like. The feature enhances the ability to find hidden gems you may not have known about otherwise.
The app allows you to share your app list by email or upload your app list onto your Facebook or Twitter account. The developers obviously want to spread the word about the app and this is a great way to do it but it's also nice that you can share your app list with users who don't have it installed on their device.
Along with following who's liking what you also receive updates when users review apps. You can then view these reviews within the app itself. This feature is excellent because it allows you to see what's being reviewed from one screen, a central hub for viewing what people are saying about new apps. The Explor app only includes reviews from featured users who have the the ability to post reviews info. If your favourite review websites doesn't have a featured account then you still have to check their website.
Explor ~ App Discovery is a brilliant app to add to your collection. The level of build and design is top quality, the guys over at Hello Chair certainly know what they're doing when it comes to design and development.
The Explor feature of discovering apps is interesting, using your app library to make recomendations isn't new but I think Apple's genious option can sometimes be a bit hit and miss so it'll be interesting to see over time how Hello Chair's app copes. I did notice the app only imported 23 apps from my library which actually contains many more than this. The app is based on it's own database so if it's data doens't include an app you have then it won't be taken into account when making recomendations.
Although the Explor feature is a large part of the app, it's the social aspects of the app that get me excited. Following people with similar tastes and seeing their app activity is what really makes Explor ~ App Discover different to anything else I've discovered. If you're after a new way to locate apps you should go and get Explor downloaded. It's completely free so there's no reason not to give it a go. You can spend time searching apps using the Explor feature, or if you're lazy you can let others search for you, and find apps based on their activity.
