Apps Photo Guide for Iphone

As a bit of an amateur photographer I'm always on the lookout for apps that will help me capture the perfect shot with my SLR. So when the people over at Blue Box Productions sent me their photography app, The Photo Guide, I couldn't wait to check it out.

The Photo Guide is essentially an in-your-pocket photography guide that helps you get the most from your digital camera. I have to point out although I use an SLR, and the app has many tips relating to this type of camera, it is aimed at everyone irrelevant to what type of camera you shoot with.
Even if you only use your iPhone for taking snaps, you'll still pick up loads of tips form The Photo Guide.

Photo Hints

On opening the app you're presented with the Photo Hints screen which is a list of top photography tips within one screen. You can scroll through the list and a quick tap on an item opens up the details screen with the related content.

The content screen allows you to scroll up and down and includes an add to favourites button so any tips you know you'll find useful can be marked for quick and easy future access. Also included on the content screen is a button to mark an item as 'read'. This helps you keep track of what you've already covered and what you haven't yet looked at.

When you've marked items as read or favourites, you can use the Filter button on the Photo Hints screen to filter the tips. This is excellent for quickly viewing your favourites or unread content. Also included on the hints screen is the ability to have a vertical scrolling list of items or a more detailed horizontal listing which includes an intro for each hint.
Along with the Photo Hints section there's also a dedicated section for iPhone hints.

These custom options for selecting how you view content and filter content is well thought out and ensures the app is easy to use. Hats off to the developers for keeping the end user at the front of their design decisions!
iPhone Hints

The iPhone Hints section is excellent if you're into shooting with the iPhone camera. It includes tips from zooming in through to how to take images that are backlit and even setting the white balance (I know, you can set the white balance on your iPhone). You may well know most of the ins and outs of taking photos but the iPhone section helps you get the most out of your iPhone camera (and even it's video mode).
HowTos Guide

Up next is my favourite part of the app, the HowTos guide. This is essentially a guide to getting the best shot from a number of various shooting situations you may find yourself in. Along with capturing the perfect shot, some of the tips also cover post processing.

Now if all this information hasn't overloaded your brain to the point of it imploding, when you're done swatting up you can have a go at the Quiz. Be warned though. It's damn tough and even the professionals may struggle to get 100%. What I loved about the quiz was every answer included details on the topic so you're always learning.

When you're done with all that and you want a bit more you can always check out the in-depth Glossary which covers all the terms, acronyms and geek speak that you'll ever need to know.
Final Thoughts

The Photo Guide looks great and it's simple to use. The people behind it obviously know what they're talking about when it comes to photography because the contents outstanding. Whether you're just wanting to find out a bit more about using your iPhones camera or you want to know how to capture a HDR of a sunset, the app covers a wide variety of tips and techniques that anyone can learn from.

Those with SLRs will get most out of the app, especially when using the HowTo guides and you need to dial in specific settings.

The next time you're out and about with your camera and you see the perfect shot but aren't quite sure how to capture it. Don't worry.
